Otafuku

Otafuku
Great handmade Soba and Udon place in Gardena.
Note: The place is nearly hidden, you can't enter from the street. All the windows are covered and the doors are locked. The only signage is on the awning and a small open/closed sign. You enter from the back of the building that only has a tiny open/closed sign.

Little Tokyo

Little Tokyo visit on Sunday.
Went to the Kinokuniya Bookstore, Anzen Hardware and had lunch at Daikokuya Ramen.

Daikokuya Ramen: The best ramen in town! Tonkotsu soup. The interior is very old, so remember you are here for the food.

Beacon + Massimo's Gelato

Lunch at Beacon, Culver City.
Beacon Bento Box:
Miso Soup
Albacore Tataki, Ponzu
Roasted Beet Salad, Laura Chenel Goat Cheese
Grilled Thai Organic Chicken
Miso Marinated Black Cod
Hijiki Onigiri

Looks really good but everything except the Onigiri had too much seasoning for my taste.
Rating: ★★☆☆☆

Massimo's Gelato, inside Rainbow Acres Natural Foods in Marina Del Rey.
The best Hazelnut and Mango Gelato!

Departures, my grandfather built this.

ok3.jpg

Departures (Okuribito) the winner of the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar. A majority of the outdoor locations were shot in Sakata city, Yamagata Prefecture. The house/cafe used by the main characters is about an hour away in Kaminoyama city also in Yamagata Prefecture. According to my relatives who live in Kaminoyama, my grandfather who was a carpenter built this building. The interiors used in the movie were shot on a soundstage.

Wood Carving with Yo Takimoto

Yo Takimoto is back in town. This time I picked a piece of Hiba wood. I created another abstract object but I am not completely happy with it so I think I'll work on it a little more.

Most of Yo's Japanese wood carving classes are organized by the Tortoise Shop in Venice, Ca. Sign up and take a class if you can.
